18TH ANNIVERSARY OF "BOSTON BAD BOY" TONY RUMBLE'S CWA
Sunday, October 23rd, 2011 * 11:32AM
On this date 18 years ago today, a new generation of regional wrestling in the northeast formed - "Boston Bad Boy" Tony Rumble's Century Wrestling Alliance. Proudly, MWF co-founder Dan Mirade, The Jackal, Commissioner Von Johnson, Pat Doyle, Rich Palladino and even The Iron Sheik remain with the Millennium Wrestling Federation, which was created in the spirit of Tony's work.
October 23rd, 1993, nearly 1,200 fans packed into the Wakefield Field House for NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS. The legendary Iron Sheik lost to Vic Steamboat in a CWA Title Match. WWE Hall of Famer "Mr. USA" Tony Atlas competed against future ECW / WWE / TNA superstar Tommy Dreamer. Taz was known as the wild savage beast The Tazmaniac. Damien DeMento, fresh off his run in WWE, joined The Jackal and Rich Palladino in the broadcast booth.
While the excitement and success of Tony's body of work has been lost in the shuffle during many failed "re-launches," it was on this day when the late Yokozuna was WWE World Champion, Vader was WCW World Champion, and ECW was still known as Eastern Championship Wrestling before going "extreme" that it all began for many in New England. It would have been exciting to see just how high the CWA could have gone if Tony didn't suddenly pass away out of nowhere in 1999.
For all of the athletes that got their feet wet in the CWA that went onto superstardom, to those that were broken into the sport the old school way where "paying your dues" was more than just a catch phrase read online, thank you Tony Rumble.
